  • Mission Statement

    The mission of the American Language Institute (ALI) is to provide quality education that upholds the high academic standards and integrity of its affiliate campus, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).

    As a department within the College of Continuing and Professional Education, the self-support division on campus, the ALI responds to the needs of the local, national and international community. The ALI offers a variety of English Language programs. Our academic offerings include the Intensive English Program, Intensive Preparatory Program, MBA Preparation Program and university credit courses. Our professional offerings include Teaching English as a Foreign Language, workplace English, as well as customized short-term programs.

    The ALI administrators, faculty, staff and campus support services strive to maximize learning and successfully prepare students to thrive in their future studies and careers.

    Jacqueline Record
    Director

    Jacqueline Record has a BA in English Literature and Spanish from Knox College and an MA in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has taught ESL in academic, workplace, and community education programs; and has published in the areas of second language writing and grammar instruction. Her professional areas of interest include program administration, faculty development, and second language writing. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, exploring Southern California, and reading.

    Operations Support Coordinator
    ​Laura Beaini holds a BS in Finance and a Minor in International Studies from California State University, Long Beach.  She started her career as a student assistant with the ALI in 2012 while studying full-time.  Once she graduated, she was hired on to help with the operational aspects of ALI.  She takes great interest in learning about different cultures and meeting individuals of various backgrounds.  She also lived in Lebanon during her childhood years and is fluent in Arabic.  During her free time, Laura enjoys hiking, traveling, yoga, and spending time with loved ones.

    Admissions Counselor
    ​Janeth Mendoza has earned a BA in Communicative Disorders from California State University, Fullerton and a MA in TESOL from the University of Southern California. She has worked with international students at the IEP level, provided speech-language therapy to school-aged children and has taught English as a second language. In her spare time, Janeth enjoys spending time with her husband, family, and friends.

    Anna Luginbill​

    MBA Preparation Program Coordinator and Faculty

    Anna Luginbill holds a BA in Applied Linguistics from Moody Bible Institute, and an MA in TESOL from Biola University. She has been teaching English in a variety of contexts since 2003, and taught at ALI for the first time in 2007. She lived abroad in South Korea for 7 years, where she worked as a business English trainer, and as an Assistant Professor at Seoul Women’s University. Now as a lecturer in the IEP and the MBA Prep Coordinator, Anna enjoys teaching students from all over the world and helping them reach their goals. When she’s not at ALI, you can find her running by the ocean, exploring Long Beach with her husband, and making crafty things while watching classic 80’s films.

    Jennifer Nolasco
    Intensive English 

    Program Coordinator

    and Faculty

    Jennifer Nolasco earned a BA in Linguistics from UCI, a MA in Linguistics from CSULB, and a TESOL Certificate from CSULB.  She has been teaching since 2008 and has been with the ALI since 2011.  At the ALI, Jennifer has taught various levels of Reading/Writing/Vocabulary, Grammar, Listening/Speaking, and Spelling.  She has also re-developed and taught the curriculum of the English through Film elective class.  She is currently the Prep Coordinator.  Her other professional activities include mentoring CSULB linguistic students and being an active member of CATESOL.  When not teaching, Jennifer enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching movies, and traveling.

    Jeremy Beal

    Intensive English Program Co-Coordinator and Faculty

    Jeremy Beal has been teaching at the ALI since Fall 2016. His career in the field of language learning and teaching began in 2006 with four years in Indonesia, where he first realized his passion for language and culture while learning and teaching on the islands of Java, Sumatra, and Madura. This was followed by three years of teaching at the Cal Poly English Language Institute in Pomona, California. Jeremy was able to return to Indonesia in 2013 as part of the English Language Fellow Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, this time for three years at Universitas Sam Ratulangi in Manado, North Sulawesi. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking and camping, and playing guitar. Jeremy holds an MA in TESOL from Biola University and a BM in Music from Colorado State University.

    Karen Ritchie
    Intensive Preparatory Program Coordinator and Faculty
    Karen has spent many years at the Beach, both studying and teaching. She earned a BA in English in 2007 and a MA in Linguistics in 2010 from CSULB and began working at the ALI immediately after. Although she enjoys teaching all levels, she has mostly been teaching levels 2 and 4 since 2011. In addition to teaching, Karen coordinates the PREP program and also oversees the Conversation Partners and Homework Lab tutors. Karen really enjoys working at the ALI because she gets to interact with a variety of different people every day, and her students always impress her.

    Mallory Massie

    Special Programs Program Coordinator and Faculty

    Mallory has been teaching EFL / ESL in various contexts since 2009. She holds a B.A. in English and Spanish from Loyola Marymount University and an M.A. in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University. She has taught in Peru, Argentina, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, New York City, and Los Angeles. Mallory is the Special Programs Coordinator at the ALI and also teaches various courses. She’s also an active member of CATESOL and has presented work related to utilizing technology in the classroom. When she’s not teaching, she enjoys hiking, camping, running, and playing her ukulele.

      Credit Class Program    Coordinator and Faculty

    Courtney Stammler earned a BA in English from DePaul University, a TEFL certificate from the University of London and two Master’s Degrees in English Literature from the University of Provence and the University of California Irvine.  Courtney has been teaching ESL, Composition, Communication Skills and Leadership workshops at various institutions since 1994, including 8 years in France. Courtney has been a Faculty member at the American Language Institute since 2001 where she has taught every level and course, including credit and non-credit courses. She particularly enjoys helping students reach their academic goals through real life simulations with American students and professionals on campus and in the community. At CSULB, Courtney serves as a Lecturer, Student Advisor, and Curriculum Coordinator. Additionally, Courtney is a certified dance instructor teaching both internationally and domestically. When she is not teaching, Courtney also enjoys hiking, reading, travelling, and meeting new people from all over the world.

    Layla B. Al-Aloom
    Layla B. Al-Aloom received a Bachelor of Science in Applied Studies from CSUDH, a MA in Education-Administration from University of Phoenix, and a MA in Education-Curriculum & Instruction/TESOL from Concordia University. She also received a Certificate of TESOL/TEFL from UCLA. Layla has been teaching since 2000. At the ALI, Layla is an ESL Lecturer and Student Academic Advisor. She teaches Grammar, Listening/Speaking, Reading/Vocabulary/Writing, and elective classes.  In addition, Layla mentors CSULB linguistics students. She also translated the ALI website into Arabic. She is a member of CATESOL. Education is very important to Layla and her goal is to ensure that each student receives the best education and feels empowered and inspired. Layla enjoys traveling, reading, and hiking.

    Trude Chan

    Trude Chan earned a BA in Psychology from UCLA and an MA in TESOL from Azusa Pacific University. She has taught for over 20 years. At the ALI, Trude has taught various levels of core classes as well as elective classes. In addition, she piloted and coordinated student poster sessions, co-developed Charlie and The Chocolate Factory curriculum, and mentored CSULB linguistic students. Trude's other professional activities include attending, presenting, and coordinating poster sessions for CATESOL and/or TESOL. She has also edited and created lessons and curriculum materials for Princess Cruises.

    Xiaofang Chen

    Xiaofang Chen has a BA in English, an MA in Linguistics, and a teaching credential in English. She began her ALI career in 1990 and has taught all the core courses in almost every level as well as elective courses. She also has taught university level Communication and Writing classes. Xiaofang has been actively involved in professional activities such as mentoring linguistic students, working as a CATESOL committee member and presenting at conferences, and developing instructional software. She has also interpreted lectures at CSULB, translated the ALI website and brochures into Chinese, and was an ALI/CSULB recruiter to China.

    Debbie Gold earned an MA in Linguistics from CSULB where she has taught ESL since January 1989. At the ALI, she has taught a multitude of courses including nearly all of the core courses and most of the electives. She has taught in both the noncredit and credit programs. She especially enjoys vocabulary acquisition and has assisted in the design and implementation of the new vocabulary program at ALI. She is passionate about teaching and tries to motivate the students to learn through new creative activities based on current research. Debbie feels very fortunate to teach ALI students and enjoys hiking, swimming, and biking.​

    Brian Kobayashi

    ​Brian Kobayashi earned a BA in Philosophy from UC Berkeley and an MA from CSULB. He taught in Japan for almost 15 years. In Japan, he worked at Orbirin University, Tsuda Juku College and Keio University. At Orbirin University, he was a Program coordinator for 6 years. He also wrote eight Eiken training books for Obunsha publishing. Brian has worked at the ALI for over 7 years. At the ALI, Brian usually teaches Level 3 Listening/Speaking, and level 3 or Level 5 Reading/Writing. Brian also developed an elective class on Children's Literature and co-developed the Sitcoms elective for the ALI.

    Janet McLellan
    ​Janet McLellan is an instructor, Activities Liaison, and a Social Media Administrator at the American Language Institute. Janet has been teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language since 1996. She has also authored/co-authored six English as a Second Language textbooks for a private English school in Los Angeles. At the American Language Institute, Janet has taught grammar, listening/speaking, reading/vocabulary, and writing in all levels. She created and taught the curriculum for the Learning through Lyrics Elective, and she mentors new teachers and CSULB Linguistics students. She also coordinated the Conversation Partners program for five years. She has been a guest lecturer in the TEFL program and various International programs at CSULB. Before teaching at ALI, Janet was Program Coordinator and a curriculum developer at Language Systems International, where she also wrote reading and listening/speaking textbooks, for seven years. Prior to moving to the United States, Janet taught in Fujieda, Japan, teaching at businesses, various levels of school, and an eikawa for over five years. She studied English Literature and Social Psychology at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, and she has as degree in English and Linguistics from Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Canada and a TEFL Certificate from the Atlantic Teaching Institute.

    Christy Nellis

    ​Christy started her adventure as an English teacher in 1990, at age 19 in a small town in Brazil. With her life-long love for people of other cultures, travel, and language, teaching English as a second language quickly became her passion, and she returned to California to finish her degrees in Intercultural Studies and TESOL at Biola University. Since then, she has been enthusiastically teaching ESL and has taught in Madrid, Spain and at several universities in Southern California. She has been at the American Language Institute since 2000 and has taught across the curriculum. Being involved over many years in mentoring TESL/Linguistic students, presenting and serving at various TESOL and CATESOL conferences as well as working on improving testing and curriculum within the American Language Institute have provided amazing opportunities for professional growth. Currently, Christy is teaching grammar and pronunciation and serving on the International Education Committee of CSULB. When she isn’t in class, she loves to camp, read, and laugh and connect with friends and family, especially her husband and daughter.

    Lucas Peterson
    L​ucas holds a BA in Japanese and an MS in Education with a TESOL emphasis from CSU Fullerton. He began teaching in 2010 at CSU Fullerton's American Language Program and at Fullerton College in the Writing Center as an ESL specialist. He spent one year in Kaohsiung, Taiwan at Wenzao Ursaline College (now University) of Languages before returning home to teach at the ALI and the North Orange County Community College District School of Continuing Education at the start of 2013. Lucas has taught across the ALI core and enrichment curriculum, notably contributing toward the College Prep course for higher level students looking for insight into life as an American university student. He enjoys giving back to the CSU by frequently hosting and mentoring graduate students in his classes and encouraging his students to take part in campus organizations and events. When Lucas is not in the classroom, he is usually grading or preparing for class, but when he is doing neither of those things, he enjoys spending time with family, online and table-top gaming, reading for pleasure, exploring the multicultural landscape of California cuisine, and, occasionally, sleeping.

    Steve Shane
    ​As a student of English Literature, Steve Shane earned a BA at UCLA, an MA at CSULB, and began studies for a PhD at UCSB. In 1987, he received a California Adult Education Teaching Credential. He has taught ESL for over 25 years. Steve has been with the ALI since 2010, where he has taught Reading/Writing/Vocabulary, Listening/Speaking, Grammar, and Vocabulary and Idioms electives. While teaching with LAUSD, he helped develop curriculum on both HIV/AIDS and diversity or Adult Education programs. He also conducted several teacher training workshops or LAUSD and CATESOL and enjoys mentoring CSULB linguistic students.

    Sue Shanley
    ​Sue Shanley holds a BA in Education from Concordia, University and a MS in TESOL from CSU Fullerton. She also received a certificate in Post-secondary Reading and Learning certificate from CSUF. She has also completed coursework in English Literature (CSUS) and Journalism (CSULB). Sue has enjoyed teaching all levels of core classes, along with IELTS, TOEFL, Spelling, and Pronunciation electives, at the ALI for the past six years. She also teaches Application Strategies and Business Current Events in the MBA Preparation program and has taught a credit course for CSULB. Sue has developed Grammar, Reading and Writing finals and diagnostics for the ALI. Mentoring numerous CSULB Linguistic students and participating in CATESOL activities have been rewarding professional endeavors for her. Running, hiking, mountain biking, and opera going are extra-curricular activities Sue enjoys on a regular basis.

    Julie Thornton
    ​Julie Thornton earned a BA in Spanish Translation and an MA in Applied Linguistics from Brigham Young University. She started her career in Applied Linguistics/ESL in 1991 and has taught at the ALI since 2005. Prior to coming to work at the ALI, she performed language testing research for the U.S. government and completed doctoral-level work in language testing at UCLA. Julie has taught the ALI core classes and elective classes in TOEFL Prep, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation. Julie enjoys reading science-fiction novels and beading.
