The main purpose of the Confucius Institute (CI) at California State University, Long Beach is to promote, develop, and offer programs in the areas of Chinese language, culture, arts and tradition. Non-credit programs will be offered to students, faculty, staff, and the community. The University is partnering with Hebei Institute of International Business and Economics (HIBE) from the city of Qinhuangdao in Hebei province, China.
Background on the Confucius Institute
Confucius Institutes are non-profit public institutions overseen by the Office of Chinese Language Council International, popularly known as Hanban. Hanban is committed to providing Chinese language and cultural teaching resources and services worldwide. It makes every effort to meet the demands of foreign Chinese learners, contributing to the development of multiculturalism and the building of a harmonious world.
Hanban’s mission is:
To make policies and develop plans for promoting Chinese language internationally;
To support Chinese language programs at educational institutions of various types and levels in other countries;
To draft international Chinese teaching standards as well as develop and promote Chinese language teaching materials.
