Cody Brown
Master of Arts in Kinesiology, Option in Sport Management

After earning his degree in Organizational Communication at CSU Chico, Cody Brown wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his career. He knew sports, especially basketball, would always be a huge part of his life, and his mom suggested that he look into the Master’s in Sport Management program at CSULB. “Once my competitive playing days were over, I wanted to find a way to stay involved. The program at CSULB was a perfect introduction into the business of sport,” Cody said. He applied to the program and graduated in February 2014 with a 4.0 GPA and an Outstanding Capstone Award.

Cody said that the instructors in the program were incredibly beneficial in preparing the students to succeed in the practical application of what they learned in each course. “The instructors were extremely involved in turning each and every one of us into a professional. I know that I would not be where I am today if it were not for the help, guidance, and knowledge they shared with us along the way.”

“I had a lot of fun and became a more prepared and confident professional by applying what I learned in the program to my internship every day,” Cody said, explaining that the program helped him with interview skills, proper etiquette, and everything in between. “This program is about a lot more than the business of sport--it taught us valuable lessons about professional integrity as well.”

Cody was recently hired as an Inside Sales Representative for the Los Angeles Clippers. In this position, Cody sells season tickets, suites, and group tickets to single games. “My job is essentially to find prospective clients and show them how to use the Los Angeles Clippers as a way to generate new clients and to grow their business. I haven’t been working here long, but I’ve already learned an incredible amount and know that I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface. The job is competitive, fast-paced, and extremely rewarding; all traits I learned to appreciate as a basketball player. I look forward to learning as much as I possibly can from the most successful Inside Sales department in the NBA.”

Cody said he would readily recommend the CSULB program to others: “This program provides you with all the tools you need to be successful in this industry; you just need to be willing to put in the work.” He added that he really enjoyed getting to know his classmates and knows he will keep in touch with them for years to come. “I'm also very thankful for my beautiful wife Geraldine for dealing with my crazy schedules, my mom and dad, Aunt Nanushk, and the rest of my family for their continued support. I'm not even close to where I want to be in my career yet, but I definitely believe that I'm moving in the right direction thanks to the people involved with this program, all of my supervisors from the Clippers, past and present, and my amazing support system.”
