The SHRM Learning System PHR/SPHR Exam Preparation Program
Certificate Program

Prerequisite: At least two years of exempt-level experience is required to register for this program.

CSULB's College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE), in partnership with SHRM®, is offering an exciting opportunity to obtain new tools for successful job performance in the ever-changing profession of Human Resource Management. The SHRM Learning System™ is designed to assist participants in preparation for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) examination and the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) examination. Both examinations are sponsored by the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI), an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management. Each module utilizes the SHRM Learning System™. HR professionals will review and fine-tune their professional knowledge and skills and broaden their perspective and understanding of the field.

You will Receive:

  • A certificate of completion, awarded by CSULB in cooperation with SHRM®. A score of 70% or better on the final exam is required to receive a certificate.

Instructor:
Charmaine Smith, PHR. She has been in the HR profession for 15 years. She served on the Executive Board and the Board of Directors for Professionals in Human Resources Association (PIHRA) and on the National Board for Area VI of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). Presently, she is on the PIHRA Foundation Committee and the California State University Human Resources Advisory Committee. She was the recipient of the PIHRA President’s “Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award” for 2000.

All course materials are included in the cost of the program. Class size is limited to ensure the maximum amount of time for questions, class discussion, and interaction with the instructor.

Should the Tuesday Section fill an additional section will be added, meeting on Wednesdays.

  • Developing leaders
  • Talent and performance management

Total Rewards

Topics Include:

  • Compensation structure and systems
  • Deferred benefits plan
  • Developing and administering competitive pay structure
  • Direct and indirect compensation
  • Benefit programs
  • International compensation and benefits

Employee and Labor Relations

Topics Include:

  • Employee relations and culture
  • Union representation of employees
  • Employer and union unfair labor practices
  • Employee involvement
  • Policies and procedures work rules
  • Labor relations and collective bargaining

Risk Management

Topics Include:

  • Organizational risk
  • Safety and health security

PHR/SPHR certification provides a nationally recognized designation and demonstrates the human resource professional's commitment to current trends and developments in the field.
