Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Studies
Degree Program

NOTE: The Distance Learning Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Studies (BSOS) will be placed on a teach-out schedule beginning Summer 2007 until its completion with all students graduated by the end of Fall 2010. Admission applications for the BS in Occupational Studies degree program offered through distance learning will be accepted up to May 15th, 2008. Only those students officially admitted to the University will be eligible to enroll in classes offered through current or new sites. Students who meet the transfer upper division admission requirements may apply and must contact the distance learning office at (562) 985-5929 for the CSULB application to verify qualifications. Enrollment may not take place until official acceptance to the University has been received for Fall 2008 semester.

The Bachelor of Science in Occupational Studies program is offered by CSULB's Department of Professional Studies and the College of Health and Human Services in partnership with The College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE). The BS in Occupational Studies program through CCPE provides an education for employed persons serving in business, industry, labor, and government. This program has provided Bachelor degrees to many working professionals in the fields of public safety including law enforcement and fire safety personnel throughout the State of California. Students enhance their current skills in various occupational subject areas while gaining knowledge of respective training and development methods. Students also learn to address problems of work-life education in an informational and technological society and benefit from hands-on technical learning through non-traditional academic learning tools. This program is designed to encourage working professionals to further their educational goals.

Program Description:

The Department of Professional Studies at CSULB and the College of Health and Human Services in cooperation with The College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) have been offering one of the largest distance education baccalaureate programs in the California State University system since 1994.

This degree program is focused on leadership and development of presentation skills.

Participants must meet regular general education requirements. CSULB representatives will explain how participants with minimal lower division credits can benefit from this program.

You Will Learn:

  • Philosophy and development of comprehensive employment-related education in California.
  • Effective writing and oral communication for education and the workplace.
  • Technological concepts and their impact on individuals, society, and culture.
  • A framework for understanding the ways in which human societies transform themselves through technological innovation.
  • The process of contract and grant proposal writing for public and private funding agencies, including budget preparation.
  • Principles of communication, human relations, understanding other people, attitude recognition, development, and mental steps to motivation.
  • Identification and development of competencies requisite for effective program management.
  • Management of ideas, material, people and processes and their interrelationships
  • Management operations and techniques in contemporary emergency service organizations.
  • Case studies to illustrate commonly encountered problems and issues in the management of human and natural disasters.
  • Learn best practices and the development of mitigation, response and recovery.

Department of Professional Studies:

Professional Studies is designed to enable persons to gain the competencies requisite for successful employment in secondary schools, community colleges and adult programs as teachers, coordinators and supervisors of vocational, occupational, career and technical preparation, and related human resource development programs.

Program Requirements:

The degree total is 120 semester units and must consist of the following components:

  • 30 semester units in residency (a minimum of 10 classes offered through this program.)
  • 24 upper division units (300 & 400 level) which a minimum of 12 units are offered through the Professional Studies Department and 9 units of upper division general education Capstone courses must be taken. All students, including transfer students, must complete at least 3 units of Global Issues, and 3 units of Human Diversity Capstone courses, both of which may be taken as part of the 9 unit Capstone requirement.
  • Up to a maximum of 70 units may be transferred from community college course work.

One of the following three courses:

  • PROF-456, Attitude Awareness in Ecucation and Workplace (3 units)
  • PROF-460, Instructional Methods for Learners with Special Needs (3 units)
  • PROF-461, Instructional Methods for Teachers of Economically and Culturally Diverse Students (3 units)

Program Admission Requirements:

  • 60 transferable units with a 2.0 GPA and the general education (GE) transfer English composition and math courses. The remaining lower-division GE requirements may be taken simultaneously with CSULB classes or after completion of the 30-unit residency requirement. Students must either meet the CSULB GE pattern or apply for GE certification by a community college before the degree is awarded.
  • Work, supervisory, professional development, teaching and training experience have been authorized to fullfill a limited amount of educational unit requirements. Please contact the Department of Professional Studies for more information.
