Program Description:

California State University, Long Beach is pleased to offer a top quality master's program in Communicative Disorders. This program is designed for highly motivated working professionals interested in pursuing employment as a fully certified Speech-Language Pathologist in a public school setting. Designed to be completed in 2 years (including two summer enrollments), candidates must complete 41 units of graduate coursework and clinical practica, as well as a graduate project. To accommodate the schedules of working professionals, courses are offered on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings during the Fall and Spring semesters, and all day Monday-Friday during Summer sessions. Candidates must have completed all B.A. pre-requisite requirements in speech-language pathology prior to entering this program.

Students who successfully complete this program (and all pre-requisite requirements) will be eligible for a M.A. in Communicative Disorders, as well as:

  • The American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology;
  • California state licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist; and
  • The California Commission of Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) Speech-Language Pathology Services credential.

The Master of Arts in Communicative Disorders program is accredited by ASHA and CCTC.

How to Apply:

Applications will be accepted for Fall 2009, with an application deadline to both the University and the Department on March 1st.

The application process has two steps:

1. Application Process to CSULB

  • Submit an online application to the University (CSU Graduate Application) at www.csumentor.edu. On screen one of the Graduate Application, click on the "Select a campus and major" button. A new window will launch with a drop-down to select either the "Long Beach campus" or "Special Session Degree Program". Select the "Special Session Degree Program" option and then select "set campus". When the "set campus" is selected, a list of majors will appear. Select "Communicative Disorders MA E (CD_MA01E1) and then click "set major" to save the major in the application. Complete the application following the instructions given.
  • Mail official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, and the $55 application fee if paying by check, to the Office of Enrollment Services, 1250 Bellflower Blvd. Long Beach, CA 90840. Make the check payable to the Office of Enrollment Services.

2. Application Process to the Department of Communicative Disorders

  • A Department of Communicative Disorders application
  • Official transcripts showing completion of bachelor's degree (this is in addition to the transcripts sent to the University)
  • A paragraph delineating related work experience
  • Submission of GRE scores (sent directly from ETS)

Note

Admission into the Special Cohort M.A. Program in Communicative Disorders occurs annually for admission the following Fall.
  • Current Fee is $600. Fees are subject to change. Information about fees for future cohorts can be requested after January 1st each year.
  • Please check with your school district office for tuition reimbursement programs.
  • There is a Traditional M.A. Program. Separate applications are required for each program. Student may only request admittance to one of these programs per academic year. Once admitted, under no circumstances are students allowed to transfer between programs.
