Certificate Program

Work/life issues, increased incidents of litigation, rapidly changing mandates; all are part of the function of an HR Manager. To keep ahead of the challenges, yet maintain your human spirit, you have to have a strategy.

Developed by experts in the human resources profession, the modules included in this certificate program cover aspects integral to the human resources function in both service and manufacturing environments.

How Do I Complete the Certificate?

  • Complete all eight modules (15 class meetings).
  • Design, develop, and present a project that will illustrate the varying aspects of each session. Materials and information presented in each session will directly relate to the project.
  • To receive the certificate in the current semester, a maximum of one class meeting may be missed. To complete the certificate in the following semester, additional absences may be made up at a fee of $50 per class, subject to program availability.

All modules and all class meetings will be held on the dates specified, but the order of the modules and instructors are subject to change.

5.2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be provided upon request as a permanent record of one's attendance, if requested by the last class meeting.

Program Coordinator:
Douglas Bender, MA, Founder and Managing Director; ONYX Global HR. He has more than 30 years experience and has worked as a senior HR executive for some of the most people-oriented organizations in America including Miller Brewing Company, Uncle Ben’s Foods, and M&M/Mars. He specializes in strategic resourcing, process re-engineering, executive coaching, and internal business consulting. He authored the book The ABCs of Leadership which received a 2008 Axiom Business Book Awards Bronze Medal. Member of the American Management Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers, SHRM, Forbe’s.com Small Business Insights Panel, the International Coach Federation, and is a charter member/officer of the prestigious Sigma Pi Phi fraternity’s Epsilon Epsilon Boule’.
Instructors:
Mary Broude, Has national and international teaching experience.  She has a broad HR background in large, publicly-held organizations such as The Walt Disney Company, SCAN Health Plan, and FHP, as well as in small, venture-backed companies in the early stages of growth.  She holds special certifcations in change management through William Bridges Associates, is a leadership skills feedback coach through the Center for Creative Leadership and received negotiation skills training through Situation Management Systems, Inc. She is co-author of the book Spoken American English for Koreans.
Sharyn Abernatha, MBA,  Senior Labor Relations Manager, California State University System. Her career experience includes working as an Asst. Business Representative for a union, negotiating collective bargaining agreements for management in the private and public sector. She currently has responsibility for various Human Resources functions such as Compensation, Benefits, discrimination complaints, employee relations, and labor relations.
W Barry Nixon, SPHR, MA, He completed the Advanced HR Management Program, Babson College; Organization Development, NTL; Systems Thinking, MIT; EEO & AA, Cornell University and University of Michigan's "Creating Competitive Advantage Through Human Resources." He co-authored 'Background Screening & Investigations' and has appeared on MSNBC, ABC, CNN and hosted the talk radio show, Workplace Violence Today.
Therese Boyle, MPA, Manager of Compensation for Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems, El Segundo. She has more than 25 years of Compensation experience and is responsible for employee recognition programs, government audits, domestic and international field assignments, compensation compliance, and special projects. She is a member of the Electronic Salary and Wage Association (ESWA), a Compensation and Benefits Professional Organization and has served as President for two terms. She has served on the ORC SIRS Executive Advisory Board since 2000.
Russell Thomas, Esq., ESQ. Attorney at Law. He has worked with the National Labor Relations Board in Washington and subsequently joined General Motors Legal Department’s Labor & Employment Law Section at its corporate headquarters in Detroit. In later years, he served as partner in two major national law firms before opening his own practice in Orange County in 1991. He currently specializes in employment law including employment and labor litigation. He also represents business clients in commercial disputes, business litigation, and international trade matters.
Emily Woodman-Nance, CPC, Founder of Progressive Coaching.  She is also a partner in Onyx Global HR, LLC, a human resources consulting firm.  She has more than 20 years of corporate, Information Technology, consulting, training, and management experience working with Fortune 500 companies.  She has extensive experience coaching executive to entry-level clients.  She is the host of the talk radio show “Career Quest” on KUCI, 88.9 FM, Irvine, which explores career transition topics.  Former co-host of “Coaching Conversations” on KUCI.
Beverly Bailey, Holds a certificate in Human Resources  from the University of California, Los Angeles, and one in Alternate Dispute Resolution from the University of California, Irvine.  She has taught for the UC, Irvine; CSU, San Bernardino; and the University of Phoenix.  She serves as a guest lecturer at professional conferences, associations, and councils.  She has been a guest speaker on Radio KZLA and has written various articles on human resources issues for professional journals and magazines. 

Legal Aspects of Personnel Administration

This module addresses laws and regulations governing: discrimination, compensation and benefits, hiring practices, safety, labor relations, unemployment and workers compensation. It will also cover developing standards in the areas of fairness, due process, and termination.

Labor and Employee Relations

This module features a discussion of employee relations in union and non-union companies. The culture of any business today is vital to its success, and you will be introduced to many methods of measuring and changing corporate culture.

  • Communication of information to employees
  • Strategies for implementing new or revised company programs

Employee Recruitment and Selection

This module is designed to provide hands-on effective recruiting and interviewing techniques.

Topics Include:

  • Recruiting techniques
  • EEO concerns
  • Permissible questions and patterned interviewing
  • Pre-employment physicals

Total Compensation

An introduction to the field of employee compensation, this session will cover compensation theories, laws, and practices.

Topics Include:

  • Compensation objectives
  • Compensation philosophy and strategy
  • State and federal laws regulating compensation
  • Incentive compensation

Training and Development

This module is an exploration of the basic knowledge and skills needed to make training and development effective parts of your human resource plan.

Topics Include:

  • Roles and responsibilities of "Trainer" vs. "Performance Consultant"
  • Differentiating between training and non-training issues in employee performance
  • Designing effective training programs
  • Evaluating training programs

Performance Management

Learn methods of measuring work performance, steps to progressive discipline, and when to use them. Also, you will learn what, when, why, and how to document employee performance.

Employee Benefits

Learning the importance of effectively communicating the nature and value of benefits to employees and to managers can make a significant impact on your organization. This module will explore the way employee benefits are designed and administered and how they compare across organizations and industries.

  • Major provisions of employee benefits programs
  • Effects of benefits management on cost and workforce quality

Coaching

Major trends will affect the future of business: globalization, technology, offshoring, aging workforce, trained workforce availability, and organizational strategy. These trends impact workforce management and business development. In response, the role of the human resources professional is expanding into that of a strategic partner within an organization.

Human Resources Management Symposium

This module is the final session of the Human Resources Certificate. Through group interaction, you will analyze a case study dealing with personnel-related issues by applying concepts learned during the program. A panel of experts will give their analysis of the same case study, providing an opportunity for you to compare results and interact with experienced human resources practitioners.
