Master of Science in Mathematics: Option in Applied Statistics

Professional Accelerated One-Year Program

Take advantage of this professional-level accelerated program offered through the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State University, Long Beach.

This program has a flexible format so you can take courses at a faster pace and finish in one year (accelerated), or go at a slower pace and finish in two years.

This program offers a unique opportunity for working adults who wish to advance their careers, pursue a teaching job, or move on to more advanced study and a PhD degree.

The program was designed with the non-traditional student in mind. You will learn cutting edge statistical techniques. For additional convenience, you will use the latest statistical software such as SAS, MATLAB, SPSS, and Minitab.

Individuals with a background in mathematics or quantitative applications such as

• Engineering

• Banking/Finance

• Computer Science/IT

• Pharmaceuticals/Medical

• Six Sigma

Special Features and Benefits:

  • Accelerated schedule-four sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer)
  • You will take no more than two courses at a time. If you wish, you can take only one at a time and go at a slower pace
  • Early evening courses are offered at CSULB campus or via the Internet, choose the format that is best for you
  • Course work can be completed in one year
  • Online students can view and participate in the courses live, or view later at their convenience
  • Live instruction is interactive and synchronous-online students interact with a headset and microphone
  • You will be able to communicate verbally with the other students, the instructor, and present your work live and with interaction

Required Courses:

  • 30 units total
  • 9 core units, 18 elective units, 3 project units

  • Experimental Design
  • Regression Analysis
  • Statistical Inference

Elective Course--Select Six Courses, 18 Units:

  • Data Mining
  • Multivariate Statistics
  • Nonparametric Statistics
  • Random Processes
  • Statistical Quality Control
  • Statistical Simulation
  • Survey Sampling
  • Time Series
  • Special Topics including Reliability, Six Sigma, and more

Final Project-3 Units

  • Complete a statistical project with a company under the guidance of a faculty advisor in statistics

Process guide for applying online:

1. Go to CSU Mentor web site: www.csumentor.edu

2. Select “Apply Online”-www.csumentor.edu/AdmissionApp/

3. Click on “Graduate Admission Applications-Apply Online”

4. Click on appropriate academic year and semester box for graduate applicant

5. Create an account if you’re a first-time CSUMentor user

6. On the first section of the application-Enrollment Information-please pay attention to the following fields:

• Term applying for-select the correct term.

• Then click on the box “Select a campus and major.”

• Select “Special Sessions Degree Program” then click “Set Campus.”

• Intended Major box will appear. Select “Math Applied Statistics MS,” click “Set Major.”

7. Make sure to answer all the questions.

8. Click “Submit” when the application is completed.

9. Remember to print a copy of the application confirmation number. You can also print a copy of

your application for your records.

Application Requirements:

  • Online university application
  • Set of transcripts of all schools attended
  • Detailed résumé (with all the upper division math/statistics courses from all colleges and universities attended)
